The Paseo Taking Shape

On October 2nd the Bay to Park Paseo design teams convened to share their final designs. Thank you to the San Diego Central Library for making available the beautiful Shiley event space. 70+ designers including San Diego’s top architects, planners, talented artists, and story-tellers were on hand to inspire and wow us with their creativity and thoughtful approach to making memorable experiences that will welcome the public and encourage walking.

PASEO SPOTLIGHT

In each newsletter update, we will introduce you to one of the Paseo design teams to share more about their process and the inspiration behind their design.

The Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge

The Hermes copper butterfly waits to take flight from the award-winning Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge by Safdie Rabines Architects in collaboration with T.Y. Lin International.

The award-winning Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge, constructed in 2011 and now an iconic gateway into Downtown San Diego, is a key piece in our city’s 100-year-old vision to connect Balboa Park with San Diego Bay.

For the Bay to Park Paseo project, the original designers of the Harbor Drive Pedestrian Bridge—local architecture firm Safdie Rabines Architects, whose recognizable work has also included the San Elijo Lagoon Pedestrian Bridge and West Mission Bay Bridge—reimagined this 550-foot-long structure beginning with an in-house design competition in their San Diego office in early 2023. From these results, the team selected one that would fit naturally within the curves of the bridge while celebrating San Diego’s abundant nature: a butterfly.
